General Types of Font Licenses You Should Look Out For See this page for a decent breakdown of the different licenses for Times New Roman. Some of the other licenses could be useful as well. If you read the fine print, it’s the “Desktop Font License” that allows you to use Times New Roman in print publications, which would allow you to use this font on KDP Print or IngramSpark. This gives you access to all of its different licenses, including: Instead, you need to visit a reputable font marketplace, purchase a license that allows you to use Times New Roman in digital or print publications, and only then could you use it legally.Īs of this writing, the Times new Roman license costs $340 through, or $210 on. If you wanted to use Times New Roman in a print book or on your book cover, you could not do it for free, even though it is included in Microsoft Word. So make sure that whatever license you buy, it includes print publications as part of it.įor example, most of us know the basic fonts provided by Microsoft Word, such as Times New Roman. In this, font is like a stock photo. You can purchase a stock photo for your book cover, but you need to check the fine print to ensure you bought the correct license to sell it. There are many companies out there that earn their revenue by creating and selling fonts – think of it like word art. In some cases, they will make it free in a certain way so people can see them and find them. Creating a font from scratch, however, is much easier said than done. What this means is that you could basically recreate a typeface from scratch and name it something completely different, and in most cases, you could use it. In addition, a font name can also be trademarked so you can't always use the name. However, they can be eligible for patent protection through a design patent. So for simplicity's sake, we will use both terms interchangeably.Ĭan fonts be copyrighted? In the United States, fonts are protected under copyright. However, most people use “font” to refer to the typeface as well. So in this case, if you had an italicized 12 point Times New Roman style, Times New Roman would be the typeface, and its individual variation (in this case 12 point size and italics) would be the font. This includes different sizes, bolding, and other stylistic variations. Font vs Typeface: What is a Font Really?Ī common mistake people make is the use of the word font. When most people say font what they actually mean is typeface. So, to help us all be on the same page, here is a quick breakdown between a font and typeface.Ī typeface is the individual lettering design that serves as the basis for all of the individual fonts within that design.Ī font is the specific computer program for each variation of every typeface. If you haven’t checked out Atticus, you can see it here. If you use Atticus to format your books, rest assured all fonts in Atticus has been checked by a lawyer and are safe to use. So, in order to protect yourself, it’s best to have an understanding of font copyright laws, how to figure out if your font is allowed to be used, and if necessary, how to purchase the rights to use a font. However, I do think that going forward, we authors should take care to be compliant, and choose fonts that we can absolutely use. This includes fonts in the book, chapter title, or even on your book cover. The only major court case that I found was against a major company and involved a Harry Potter font. If you use Times New Roman in your print book without a license, the chances of you getting sued are slim. That means that if an author isn’t careful, they could choose a font from their Word or other writing software, like Times New Roman, that isn’t legally allowed to be put in a print product without an extra paid license. Some fonts, while free to use personally or in other electronic forms, have extra requirements or copyright rules if you are to put it on a physical product…like a book. Did you know that just because a font came with your computer or Word doesn’t mean you can use it in your physical print book?

Despite these observations, there has been barely any research on the odor of paints, and little is known about the causative odor active compounds. Besides the influence on human health, acrylic paints have been reported to emit an unpleasant and long lasting odor ( 4, 5). However, many manufacturers keep on using mineral spirits, as it is an easy and cheap way to attain the desired properties. Therefore, these substances bare the risk of causing adverse effects on human health after acute or chronical exposure without being recognized by the customer. It is important to mention that some of these substances show none or only a low odor activity. The latter substances have been reported to be harmful, as hepatic damage and neurotoxic effects have been observed for these volatiles in the past ( 3). The volatile fraction of water-based paints is composed of alcohols, esters or mineral spirits, i.e., a mixture of various long- and branched-chain alkanes (C 8–C 14) and volatile aromatic compounds. Likewise, VOCs from acrylic paints were proposed as a cause for occupational asthma ( 2). Previous studies demonstrated that the emitted VOCs caused stronger asthmatic symptoms in affected persons when being asked to apply acrylic paint on a board for a period of 60 min ( 1). Whereas, hobby painters sometimes show allergic-like symptoms, feel dizzy or suffer, at times, from headache after long painting sessions, professional painters showed different types of long-term effects depending on the duration and extent of their exposure. Painters, artists, and other workers that are exposed to emissions that are released from paints have been, however, reported to suffer from physical harm caused by the emitted VOCs. Their fast drying process, the easy handling and their high covering capacity make them suitable not only as artist paints, but also for the application as in- and out-door construction paint, varnishes and other coatings. As most of these substances are also known to be harmful, a reduction or replacement of these substances by less toxic and non-odor active ingredients is likely to turn out to be advisable in order to reduce the odor and potential negative physiological effects of paints. Thereby, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (naphthalene, indane, and tetralin derivatives) contributed to the plastic- and mothball-like odor whereas acrylic monomers (butyl acrylate) were found to be responsible for a mushroom-like and geranium leaf-like odor. The identified odorous substances were primarily benzene derivatives (styrene, ethylbenzene, allylbenzene, propylbenzene) with a plastic-like, aromatic and solvent-like odor. Additionally all samples were sensorially characterized by a trained sensory panel. Therefore, the samples were extracted with dichloromethane and purified via solvent assisted flavor evaporation prior to analysis of the distillates by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), and GC-GC-MS/O. In this study six acrylic paints for artists were analyzed regarding their odor-active constituents. Due to their emitted volatile organic compounds, these paints are associated with different work-related diseases and are known to emit an unpleasant odor. Acrylic paints are fast drying water based paints that are easy to handle and have a high covering capacity and therefore possess many characteristics that make them applicable in a wide range of applications, such as varnishes or artists paints. 【Warranty】Our products have 12 months refund or replacement and lifetime technical support. Fighting on a doomed U-boat isn't an experience most lived to share, but according to experts, this iconic film is the best simulation there is. It's the old adage: "War is long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror." No other submarine movie so completely lulls you into the claustrophobic rhythms of a stir-crazy crew, only to torpedo that tedium with shock and awe. They took a few liberties with reality but not enough to make. It's still three-and-a-half anxious hours in a tin can - but nothing compared to the nearly five-hour edit created for German TV.įellowship films where a group sets out on a quest always have that brief interlude where the heroes make camp, start a fire, and share a meal. Hands down Das Boot is the most realistic both in storylines and in the submarine environment. This definitive director's cut has better sound and picture but spares no length. That's the haunting prologue to Wolfgang Petersen's 1981 submarine classic "Das Boot," which got an excellent redux in 1997. Of the 40,000 men who went to sea in German U-boats in World War II, 30,000 never returned. If submarine movies are a microcosm of a global society, this film argues that without cooperation between East and West, no one will be left alive. In any event, by the time British and Norwegian rescuers were permitted to help (spoiler alert!) it was too late for all 118 souls aboard. The only quibble is it blames a random admiral when many have pointed the finger at Vladimir Putin directly. The Russian military is portrayed as a force in decline whose leadership would rather sacrifice its own soldiers than admit weakness. "The Command" is a western European production with a stellar cast including Colin Firth. Ironically, the film's only real flaw is it distractingly plays with aspect ratio as letterboxes move in and out at key moments. And unlike so many older titles only available in a hideous 16x9 crop, "The Command" comes as director Thomas Vinterberg intended, in full widescreen glory. So forget the haters this sci-fi adventure is a thrill if you go in understanding it's a B-movie in big-budget scuba gear.ĭespite a middling budget, "The Command" has some of the most flawless and subtle cinematography of any submarine thriller. Even surrounded by super-geniuses, it's up to Norman's intuitive instincts as a shrink to solve the riddle of a mysterious alien consciousness. Liev Schreiber and Sharon Stone round out this perfectly cast crew, each catching cabin fever in the face of their strange discovery. This was Crichton at the peak of his sci-fi powers, and nobody was better at blending popular science into technically plausible thriller plots. Jackson is fantastic as the team's resident mathematician who is suspiciously resigned to spending the anxious hours lying about reading another story about underwater peril, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."Ĭritics absolutely hated this movie, particularly the ending, but the conceit is just too intriguing to dismiss. Dustin Hoffman plays Norman, a psychologist called upon for a secret mission to a deep-sea habitat where it turns out a strange and possibly extraterrestrial orb has been found buried inside a sunken spaceship. After narrowing down their choices to the type of wine they want, they usually rely on price to help them select a bottle since they have little else to help ascertain the quality. Higher prices convey higher quality and better value and lead people to esteem the brand. According to the market research firm Ipsos, nearly half of all Americans are willing to switch to a higher-priced brand if they perceive it to be of better quality. On the flip side, higher prices may actually be more appealing. Penney’s offer of $1.97 jeans last Christmas think those items would be made of quality materials and fashionable designs? In fast food, we’ve brought the judgment on ourselves by spotlighting our lowest-priced products as the “value menu.” We’ve equated value with low prices when we should be shaping customers’ understanding of our complete value proposition. A low price may attract attention, but it dilutes the perception of quality and value. We need to unplug from our preoccupation with customers who want deals and look with a more sober eye at the role of discounts in purchasing decisions. If we want to avoid setting ourselves up for prolonged margin problems again, we need to rethink discounting. As Yogi Berra said, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” It seems we find ourselves today in a situation uncannily similar to those value menu heydays. In fact, I came across an article that started out with the declaration, “Faced with a crowded market and flat sales, the fast-food industry is locked in a price war that few in the burger business want to acknowledge.” Given how well this seemed to describe the current state of fast food, I was surprised to find it was a piece written back in 1989. And my email inbox and Sunday papers remain filled with coupons from fast-food chains. Subway was offering $2 subs for its “Customer Appreciation Month” last December. Taco Bell introduced a $1 Cravings menu in many markets. But that doesn't mean the category has forsaken discounts as its primary traffic-driving tactic. So what is the right discounting strategy?Ī: True, McDonald's has replaced its Value Menu with the Dollar Menu & More, and Wendy's 99 Cent Menu has been reconceived as the Right Price Right Size menu. Q: Other restaurants seem to be moving away from 99-cent-and-under value menus. We found that the clutch wasn't sensitive enough for smaller screws, offering more power than necessary for detailed jobs. Its chuck was also successful at grasping and driving both large and fine bits. Our tester found that it was powerful enough to drive a half-inch lag into the wood without a pilot hole, and noted the drill had no trouble with any screw or bit they tried. Our tester appreciated the drill’s light, which can be positioned and pointed to illuminate whatever project you’re working on.ĭuring testing, the Dewalt XR drilled 2.5-inch holes into concrete at about 6.5 seconds per hole, which speaks to the significant overall power of this drill. The drill comes with two batteries, a charger, and a carrying case, so you’ll have everything you need to power it and keep track of all of its accessories. If you’re looking to invest, the best cordless drill is this pick by Dewalt. The clutch wasn't sensitive enough for lightweight screws and may be too powerful for regular household use. Product Details: Voltage: 18/20 volt | Brushed or Brushless Motor: Brushed | Battery: 2 amp-hour battery | Chuck Size: 1/2 inch | Weight: 3 pounds and 8 ounces When it came to ergonomics, our tester found that the drill was comfortable for long-term use as well. The Ridgid R86001K comes with an efficient carrying case and sports a bright LED light that impressed our tester with its illumination and coverage. With that being said, the Ridged has sufficient torque for drilling pilot holes, driving smaller fasteners, and digging out some harder materials, so it’s a good choice for putting together furniture or installing hardware around the home. Our tester noted that the drill began to stall out with bits at 1 1/2 inches. However, when our tester drilled 2.5-inch deep holes into concrete, the drill did take some time, as it only completed five holes in about a minute. Our tester found that this compact brushed motor drill was successful at driving lag screws and drilling holes of all sizes. The light-duty drill is compact and features an LED light that makes it easy to finish projects in small, hard-to-reach spots. The Ridgid R86001K Cordless Drill/Driver Kit is the best cordless drill for DIYers looking for value and performance. Our tester found that this drill stalled when using bits around the 1 1/2-inch range. Product Details: Voltage: 18/20 volt | Brushed or Brushless Motor: Brushless | Battery: 5 amp-hour battery | Chuck Size: 1/2 inch | Weight: 4 pounds and 13 ounces Still, they noted this isn’t what they’d be buying such a heavy duty drill for. Their only frustration with the drill came from its clutch, which failed to engage on small screws with softer materials-an issue that could prove problematic with drywall jobs, where the papery surface’s tension contributes to the drywall’s structural integrity. Our tester was impressed with the M18’s battery pack, which remained fully charged after 50 minutes of intensive use. However, our tester noted that they found it to have particularly good ergonomics and balance, which made the drill comfortable to use for long sessions in spite of its significant weight. This hammer drill features a contemporary brushless motor and has a long-lasting battery you’re sure to appreciate.Īs you might expect from a hammer drill, the M18 is heavy, at about 5 pounds. Overall, the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2904-22 is the best cordless drill, whether you’re working in a construction setting or on advanced DIY projects.
